Us -Too! Brampton General Meeting

March 8th, 2005

Around 65 members, spouses and guests attended
Dr. Ian Tannock's
presentation on
"Hormone Therapy and Chemotherapy
in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer"

Dr. Tannock is the Daniel E Bergsagel Professor of Medical
Oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital and
the University of Toronto.

Dr. Tannock discussed Hormone and Chemotherapy treatments
by building a case around a hypothetical 68 year old patient who
presents with bone pain, a gleason score of 8, a PSA of 245 and a
positive bone scan. 'How should such a man be treated?'

Dr. Tannock 's talk covered Hormonal treatment options such as
Orchiectomy, Estrogen, LHRH agonist and Antiandrogen while
detailing a chosen treatment journey by Zoldex and Casodex,
including side effects such as bone loss and its prevention,
development of hormonal resistance, secondary hormonal
treatment and approaches to its delay or prevention.

Dr. Tannock then went to the treatment of Hormonal resistant
cancer and a discussion on the types of Chemotherapy
options that would be suitable for the hypothetical patient.

The results of several clinical trials were presented with their
outcomes covering quality of life and mortality.

Dr. Tannock concluded his talk on a note of hope, tempered with
words of caution, as he covered new therapies under investigation
such as those involving inhibition of growth factors, stimulation
of processes that can make cancer cells more likely to die,
anti-angiogenesis approaches and immunological approaches.

The Questions & Answer session proved to be of particular interest
with numerous questions forthcoming from the audience making
it a very lively and highly interactive evening.

In a nut-shell certainly a very informative and educative
session for all - thanks Dr. Tannock !

Dr. Tannock's laboratory-based research is in physiological causes
of resistance to chemotherapy in solid tumors and methods of overcoming
them. He has led several large clinical trials for patients with prostate
cancer and breast cancer and is the recipient of several prestigious
awards in his field of work.
