Who should consider it and why"

Dr. Juanita M Crook, FRCPC, MD

Professor of Radiation Oncology
University of Toronto

An audience of around 45 members, wives attended this very informative
talk by Dr. Juanita Crook.

Dr. Juanita Crook's talk dealt with the very interesting subject of brachytherapy,
who should be considering it and why. She described how data such as the PSa,
gleason score and staging etc. was used to decide the risk groups and to determine
the best treatment options for a given patient. She went into details of the selection
factors for brachytherapy discussing the quality of life issues related to how
brachytherapy compared with various other treatments options. Her talk covered
the type of radiation used in brahytherapy, the types of seeds used, their half life,
their implantation techniques and and how they worked.

Dr. Crook explained that brachytherapy had been around since the late 1980s and
went on to present long term outcomes comparing the results with the other treatments,
the effect of age and some of the side effects and how they were managed. She also
covered several FAQs touching amongst others areas such PSa kinetics,
radiation safety and PSa 'bounce' following brachytherapy. The talk concluded with
a summary of key Brachyterapy advantages and side effects.

The talk was easily understood and highly appreciated by audience - the presentation
slides being rich in graphics, X-ray images and graphical data together with Dr. Crook's
